Fukurokuju

雪にはあらで花のふゞき  Yuki niha arade hanano hubuki

It wasn’t snow, but a blizzard of flower petals.

 

室町後期から江戸初期にかけて流行した俗謡で、江戸時代には三味線の歌謡として流行した俗謡のひとつに次のような歌がある。

 

吉野の山を雪かと見れば

雪にはあらで花の吹雪よ

 

This appears to have come from the following line in an early Edo popular song:

              Yoshino mountain seemed wreathed with snow

              It wasn’t snow, though, but a blizzard of flower petals

Yoshino, a mountain in Nara Prefecture, is famous for its thousands of cherry trees.
