FORUM HAKUIN in NEW YORK
THE HIDDEN MESSAGE OF HAKUIN'S ZEN PAINTINGS

The Zen master Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) is best known as the founder of the modern Japanese Rinzai Zen tradition, but he was also a man of extraordinary powers of artistic expression. During his lifetime he produced not only a large body of written work, but also a vast number of Zen paintings and suiboku calligraphies

During the past five years, the Hanazono University International Research Institute for Zen Buddhism(IRIZ) has surveyed, catalogued, and photographed approximately 3,000 of Hakuin’s artistic works. In February, 2009, a selection of 1,100 of the finest of these works will be published by the Institute in the form of an illustrated catalogue. In commemoration of this event, a special conference, the Hakuin Forum, is to be held in New York City in March, 2009. The conference will feature a lecture and discussion of the profound (and often humorous) messages that Hakuin sought to convey in his ink paintings and calligraphies.

The Hakuin Forum is open to anyone with an interest in the Zen Buddhist tradition and the Zen master Hakuin.
