Prof. Yoshizawa Katsuhiro Hanazono University International Research Institute for Zen Buddhism
Two examples have recently come to light in which Hakuin provided the inscriptions for paintings by the eminent bunjinga artist and calligrapher Ike no Taiga (1723–1776). The correspondence between Hakuin and Taiga, which began when the latter was only twenty years old, reveals a close relationship between the two. This presentation examines several materials relating to Hakuin and Taiga and discusses the connection between the Zen master and the master artist.
